Our 3 Little Pigs Story
We have been practising retelling the story of 'The Three Little Pigs', using actions and signs to help us. You can watch a video of our oral story by clicking on 'Video Resource Centre' on the 'Children' tab and finding class LC.
A Letter from the Wolf (26.11.24)
Today we received a letter from 'The Big Bad Wolf'. He is not very happy about his reputation of being bad and has asked us to reconsider. He has sent us three new books to read and asked that we decide whether he could have a new name where is not accused of being big or bad. We have started to read 'Footprints in the Snow'. We are taking our time, stopping and talking about each page, answering questions about the text. We hope to finish it tomorrow. Why not ask your child if they can tell you anything about the story so far?
The Big Bad Wolf Investigates (Part 2)
(26.11.24)
Today we carried out another investigation from this book. The Big Bad Wolf scientist claims that the gingerbread house in Hansel and Gretel cannot exist in real life as a house made of biscuit would collapse when it rains. We tested to see if this was true. We made a gingerbread structure, poured warm toffee sauce on top and then checked on the strength of the walls by tapping a spoon on the sides. We observed any changes that happened and talked about what we found out. We then had a little sample of some of the gingerbread and sauce! It was yummy!!
The Big Bad Wolf Investigates.....
(Part 1) 19.11.24
We have started reading this book. It is written by the 'Big Bad Wolf' and inside he makes the claims that many of the traditional fairy tales that we have been reading in class simply cannot be true! He gives scientific reasons for his arguments.
Today we read about the story of the 'Three Little Pigs'. Wolf argues that he couldn't possibly blow the pigs houses down as wolves can't purse their lips to blow. We learnt that the animal with the strongest blow is actually a blue whale. Wolf asked the children to find out who has the strongest blow in our class. We tested this by blowing Maltesers across a strip of paper using a straw and measuring the distance. Below are a few photos of the investigation.
Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?.....
This half term, we will be continuing our topic of traditional fairytales, but with a focus on the character of the Big Bad Wolf. We have already met the wolf in 'Little Red Riding Hood'. To start this half term, we will focus on the story of 'The Three Little Pigs'. We will be learning to retell the story orally (using signs and actions to help us). We will also be describing the setting. We will then move onto reading different versions of 'The Three Little Pigs', noting similarities and differences in the stories and finally, sharing some stories that suggest that the wolf may not be all that bad!
To start off our topic, we went into the forest yesterday. The children discovered some story props left on the forest floor. They quickly deduced that the story that linked all the props was 'The Three Little Pigs'. They worked beautifully in two teams to create a story mat of the story. We took pictures of these story mats and will be using them in Geography to draw a story map.
