Friday 10th July

Today we are looking at the suffix -ing. A suffix is a string of letters that go at the end of a word. By adding prefixes and suffixes to a root word, we can change its meaning.

Have a look at this PowerPoint to see how the suffix -ing changes a word.

We call the basic word that the suffix is added to, the root word. When you add -ing to these root words it is quite simple. The spelling of the root word doesn’t change. However, look at these words with the suffix -ing added to them:

There are some rules with adding the suffix -ing to a root word. If a root word ends in ‘e’, you must take the ‘e’ away before adding the suffix -ing.

Have a look at these words with the suffix -ing added to them:

If the root word has a short vowel sound at the end, then you must add a double letter before the -ing.

Here are the rules to remind you about adding the suffix -ing:

Have a look at this PowerPoint to consolidate your learning about using the suffix -ing and have a go at the activity afterwards.
