Winter is underway and summer days are long gone. We are going to travel to Antarctica this half term to meet some interesting wildlife. One in particular has wings but cannot fly. Any thoughts to who it might be?...
That's right we are heading to Antarctica and meeting a
penguin called Otto!
Our first topic in our year 2 learning journey is:
Marvellous Monsters
The year 2 area needed sprucing up after a long summer. We have made it bright and vibrant to attract some cool and funky monsters to visit us!
We are enthusiastic to meet some to get to know them more as we know there are so many nice monsters out there that get a bad name!
2W PE
Outdoor PE - Wednesday afternoon
Indoor PE - Friday afternoon
Children are to come to school and remain in their PE kits all day on the days they have PE.
Please ensure they are wearing the correct kit and that long hair is tied back.
They can wear plain tracksuit tops and bottoms in the cooler weather.
If they have indoor PE, then can wear warmer sports clothing over their shorts and t-shirt, or choose to wear plain joggers for the day. PLEASE CONSULT OUR UNIFORM POLICY.
Spellings
We will be assessing the children on their phonics and their spellings weekly on a Friday.
We will update the weeks spellings on the class webpage each week so your child can prepare for their Friday quiz.
The spellings we will be focusing on to begin with are the Year 1 and 2 common exception words.
The children ideally need to be able to read and write all of these words by the end of Year 2.
The children will also have chance to practise these spellings when they first come into school each morning.
Home Learning
In year 2 our aim is for the children to get at least 4 pieces of home learning recorded in their diary each week. This can be anything from reading a couple of pages of their book or the whole thing, reading online books on Bug Club, practising their times tables or attending a club. It could even be helping prepare dinner, tidy up or helping look after and entertain younger siblings and pets!
**Remember practising your weekly spellings counts as a merit if recorded**
For each piece of home learning recorded your child will receive a merit. These are counted up at the end of each half term and get transferred into Learning Loot which can be spent in the Homework Hut!
15 merits = Bronze award
20 merits = Silver award
25 merits = Gold award
and for 2W, 50+ merits = Planet Perfect
Let's see if we can all get on at least Bronze every half term team 2W.
Reading books and Home Learning diaries
Reading books and diaries need to be in school every day and go home every night.
When you read with your child this needs to be acknowledged in the diary. Let us know if the book is finished and it will be changed. If you have only read a couple of pages, that is fine, just note the pages that have been read and we can send the book back home to continue with.
Reading is highly encouraged and is fundamental in your children strengthening their ability to learn. Do not feel pressured to finish books, a couple of pages and discussions, about what they have read, all contribute to developing confidence and fluency.
Home learning online
Your children have logins in the front of their red home learning diaries. These logins can be used to access different programs that we use in school and could be used at home to further their learning. Please let us know if you need new logins or you need any support with these.
Bug Club
This is a website where children can access books that are tailored to the book band that they are reading within school. It also includes questions to check their understanding and gives rewards too! This can be accessed on tablets as well as laptops. This reading can then be recorded in their diaries to earn more merits.
Purple Mash
This is another educational website that your child can access. It has games and activities for all areas of the curriculum.
Spelling Shed
This website allows the children to practise spelling rules and patterns in addition to their weekly spellings set by school.
